Recruiting Policies

Full-Time Employment Offer Policy

Full-time offers extended after a summer internship must remain open through November 20, 2009, although it is permissible to offer incentives for students to accept before that date.

Full-time offers extended to second-year students during the fall recruiting process must remain open for four weeks from the students' receipt of a written offer. For full-time offers extended during the spring, a decision period of at least 10 business days from the receipt of a written offer is required.

Please include these acceptance deadlines in all offer letters.

The MBA Career Management Office requests that employers inform students of their status within two weeks of an interview.

Summer Internship Offer Policy

The best intern interview experience for both employers and students happens in the second half of the year. Georgetown’s McDonough School of Business recommends that internship interviewing begin no sooner than January 19, 2010.

The MBA Career Management Office requires that companies extending summer internship offers allow a decision period of at least 15 business days from the receipt of a written offer or until February 12, 2010, whichever comes later.

The MBA Career Management Office requests that employers inform students of their status within two weeks of an interview.

Extending Offers
Job offers for both full-time and internship positions should be made in writing and sent directly to the student. Offer letters should include approximate start dates, acceptance deadlines, salary information, and other negotiated compensation.

The MBA Career Management Office would appreciate it if you would also notify us when an offer is extended.

Exploding Offers
Extending an exploding offer, defined as giving a candidate an unreasonably short period of time to accept an offer before it is revoked, is prohibited. In addition, if a student is taking an unreasonably long period of time to respond to an offer, please contact our office so we may address the issue with the student.

Withdrawing an Offer
If an employer must withdraw an offer, the employer should contact Jeannette Frett, Assistant Dean, MBA Career Management immediately at 202-687-9710. This is a serious matter that can significantly harm an employer’s reputation and subsequent ability to recruit students. Similarly, if a student reneges on an acceptance of employment, the employer should notify the Assistant Dean, MBA Career Management immediately who will then review the situation and take the appropriate action.
