Panel II: Regulation of Financial Markets
Introduction by Professor Rohan Williamson, Georgetown University McDonough School of Business
This session will examine the regulations being proposed to fix the weaknesses in the regulatory structure of financial markets. Securitization became rife with abuses; rating agencies, along with many others, failed to understand the risks involved in new and old financial instruments; and newer products such as credit default swaps created new stresses on the system. Counterparty risk led to a run on the financial markets. Firms that were “too big to fail” failed. Executive compensation was not structured appropriately and did not provide the right incentives.
