Net Impact Hosts Hershey Foods Sr. VP of Corporate and Social Responsibility

On September 17, 2007, John Long, VP, Corporate Social Responsibility at Hershey Foods Corporation spoke to the MSB chapter of Net Impact, a network of business students and alumni dedicated to using the power of business to better the world.

Mr. Long discussed the history of Hershey Foods and the importance the company has placed on doing good work since the time of the company's founding.  Milton Hershey and his wife Catherine opened a school for orphans in 1909, and the company has continued their work and remained active in philanthropy.

Much of Hershey Food's work is dedicated to improving education around the world and preventing abuses in child labor.  Mr. Long's message resonated with the student- audience, some of whom are interested in careers within the non-profit sector.  One MBA student said, "Listening to Mr. Long speak re-motivated me.  Up until this event, I was feeling a bit disheartened about life after graduate school. Now I feel as though there are actually careers out there that will inspire me."

Mr. Long joined Hershey in 1986, and advanced to become the Vice President of Hershey's Corporate and Social Responsibility Department (CSR).  He serves as the chairman for the World Cocoa Foundation, and is also on the boards for United Way International, International Cocoa Initiative, and International Board for Education and Self-Help.

The McDonough School is a charter member of Net Impact, and the MSB chapter was formed in 1993.  At that time, Georgetown hosted the first national business student conference on business and responsibility, and later held the 10th annual Net Impact Conference in 2002.  Georgetown University's historical mission of justice and Jesuit teaching combined with the high caliber of its globally-minded students and faculty enable Georgetown Net Impact to serve as one of the most active student organizations on campus.
