Finance Professor Shares Expertise with SEC Committee

James Angel, associate professor of finance at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business, appeared before the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Equity Market Structure Advisory Committee on Aug. 2. The meeting, which was held at the SEC’s headquarters in Washington, D.C., focused on recommendations related to market quality and customer issues.

In his comments, Angel discussed the changes that have been made to prevent excessive market volatility such as occurred during the Flash Crash of 2010. Angel said:

  • We have made a lot of progress, but still need to refine our shock absorbers more;
  • Our market-wide circuit breakers are dangerously defective and need to be rethought; and
  • The liquidity problem for smaller companies is a bigger problem for the U.S. economy that the SEC should address.
