Learning Beyond the Classroom

Last fall, Thomas Cooke, a distinguished teaching professor, and Matthew Cypher, director of the Georgetown McDonough’s Steers Center for Global Real Estate, provided their students an unforgettable experience. Cooke and Cypher’s First Year Seminar, The Real Estate Game, combined classroom learning with visits to create memorable moments.

While teaching The Real Estate Game, the professors took the real estate learning on-site. The students obtained unprecedented access to the new Georgetown dormitory that is currently under construction. While at the site, they engaged with several key business leaders and learned firsthand what it is like to undertake and complete a large-scale construction project.

In addition, the class took a tour of iconic D.C. locations and learned about the realities of real estate construction from Cypher, who also is Georgetown’s Atara Kaufman Term Professor. Both Cypher and Cooke underscored the sometimes tumultuous aspects of the real estate world, as well as what it takes to be successful in the competitive market.
