MBA Students Log More than 700 Service Hours During MOV

Every year at the McDonough School of Business, the month of November is dubbed the Month of Volunteerism (MOV) as MBA students compete to see which group of their peers can volunteer the most service hours at almost 100 different events and locations throughout the Washington, D.C., area. This year, full-time and evening program students volunteered 706 hours of their time to help the community.

During this time, students also participated in Movember. Promoted nationally by the Movember Foundation, the campaign encourages men to grow mustaches and receive pledges to raise awareness of men’s health issues, ranging from prostate cancer to mental health illnesses. Donations and proceeds go toward further research and finding cures for various health-related issues men face today.

At Georgetown McDonuogh, the MBA Student Government Association (SGA) coordinated MOV service activities such as writing letters to veterans, making sandwiches for local nonprofit Martha’s Table, and volunteering at the Foggy Bottom Food Pantry to help low-income D.C. residents. This year, according to the SGA, total community service hours increased by 75 percent, and several student cohorts out of the 14 participating groups reported over 50 percent participation.

The cohort winners for the 2015 MOV season are as follows:

1) The FT17 Saxas – With 85 percent participation (53 participants/62 in cohort) and almost 90 hours of service, the FT17 Saxas earned first place.

2) The FT17 Gray – With 58 percent participation (38 participants/66 in cohort) and 129 hours of service, the FT17 Gray cohort placed second.

3) The FT17 Blue – With 38 percent participation (25 participants/64 in cohort) and 93 hours of service, the FT17 Blue cohort placed third.

Congratulations to all winners and participants!
