The Ethics of Lobbying

The Georgetown Institute for the Study of Markets and Ethics (GISME) at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business will focus its fall symposium on the Ethics of Lobbying. The effect of lobbying on government policy is a topic of perennial comment in the media and research by social scientists. However, the ethical quality of the activity is less frequently discussed. Many harbor an unexamined assumption that there is something ethically suspect about lobbying.

Fourteen of the nation’s leading philosophers and political scientists will examine the issue and present essays containing their analysis. Representing a spectrum of ideological and intellectual perspectives, the essayists will explore a wide range of ethical questions raised by the activity of lobbying and present their thoughts at the conference. The sessions are designed to leave time for significant exchange with the audience.
