  • Georgetown McDonough to Host State Department’s Inaugural Global Impact Economy Forum

    On April 26, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will convene the first-ever Global Impact Economy Forum at the Department of State. The program will continue on April 27 at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business in Washington, D.C., hosted by the school’s Global Social Enterprise Initiative. The forum will bring together more than 350 high-level investors, business executives, entrepreneurs, philanthropists, academics, and U.S.

  • MBAs Present Results of Global Consulting Projects Related to Social Enterprise

    Georgetown McDonough School of Business MBA students discussed the impact of their Global Experience projects related to social enterprises in Spain, China, Brazil, Israel, UAE, and Vietnam, in the Fisher Colloquium on April 9 at the Social Impact Showcase. The projects ranged from market-entry strategies for fair-trade coffee brands to detailed road maps for public-private partnerships to maximize their social and economic impact. The discussion panel was moderated by Professor Ricardo Ernst.

    Entrepreneurs Compete at Hoya Challenge

    Months of work by Georgetown’s most entrepreneurial students culminated in the 2012 Hoya Challenge business pitch competition finals on Saturday, April 21. Sixteen semifinalist teams, which had advanced from a 48-team preliminary round in March, pitched their business ideas to judging panels of entrepreneurs and investors. 

  • Undergraduates’ Paper to be Published in Journal of Applied Finance

    Two Georgetown McDonough School of Business undergraduate students, seniors Sean Kensil and Kaitlin Margraf, wrote a paper that was accepted for publication by the Journal of Applied Finance. Their research, titled “The Advantage of Failing First: Bear Stearns v. Lehman Brothers,” was written as a part of a course and individual study project led by Professor David Walker.

    Alumni Connection Leads to Global Learning Experience

    Tyler Read (BSBA ’13) knew his spring semester would be a time for experiential learning. The marketing and international business major planned to study abroad at the Ludwig Maximilians Universität in Munich, Germany, beginning in March 2012, but he had part of the semester to fill before going to Munich and the motivation to do something with his business knowledge.

    The Georgetown Center for Business and Public Policy at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business will host Catherine Wolfram, associate professor and co-director of the Energy Institute at the University of California Berkeley’s Haas School of Business, to discuss her research on the growing demand for energy in the developing world.

    Institute to Produce Ethical Business Leaders and Help Individuals Handle Ethical Problems at Work

    Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business announces the creation of the Georgetown Institute for the Study of Markets and Ethics (GISME). Drawing from scholars from all divisions of the university, it will apply the insights from business ethics, law, political science, public policy, and economics to the ethical issues encountered in a market society.

  • Georgetown McDonough Among Honorees in Educational Advertising Awards Competition

    The inaugural issue of In Review and In Gratitude, the annual report for Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business, received Merit recognition at the 27th Annual Educational Advertising Awards competition, sponsored by the Higher Education Marketing Report.

    Covering 2010-11, In Review and In Gratitude is the first printed donor report produced by the Office of External Affairs and Alumni Relations for the business school. The 30-page publication was sent to the school’s alumni.

    Class Project Serves Cancer Patients and Families

    When Peter Brown (MBA ’98) reached out to his former professor Robert Bies for advice about increasing the impact of the Mattie Miracle Cancer Foundation, he received ideas from 30 undergraduate students. The fall 2011 Creativity and Innovation class took on the assignment as their consulting project, implementing Parent Meal Night, introducing the children to Hoya athletes, and proposing technology that would better express the stories of the families and the foundation.

  • Donors Steer Real Estate Initiative Forward

    Georgetown McDonough’s Real Estate Finance Initiative, which is part of the school’s Center for Financial Markets and Policy, received a major boost in its fundraising efforts. The school has raised $6.5 million toward an initial goal of $15 million, with $5 million from a single gift by Robert and Lauren Steers. Robert (BSBA ’75, pictured above) is co-chairman and co-CEO of Cohen & Steers Inc., chair of the McDonough School of Business Board of Advisors, and a member of Georgetown University’s Board of Directors.
