THE CURRICULUM

Individual sessions have been developed to provide participants with the most up to date perspectives on today's seminal issues - patient safety and quality improvement.

Character-based Leadership
The daily work of health care leaders is characterized by moral and ethical conflicts as they struggle to implement the organizations' mission, vision and values in an increasingly constrained reimbursement environment.  This presentation focuses on approaches to strengthen personal and organizational integrity to create positive change in our health care systems.

Innovations in Pay for Performance
P4P is continuing to gain traction as a vehicle to better align payment with quality of care, yet demonstration projects have had varying degrees of success.  This presentation will focus on innovative approaches to developing incentives that improve efficiency and patient care.

Building and Sustaining Employee Engagement
Meaningful quality improvement cannot occur without the full engagement of all employees, but particularly those at the nexus of the clinical encounter.  This session focuses on the current state of employee engagement, and offers specific suggestions for creating and sustaining an engaged workforce.

Getting Physicians on Board: Strategies to Increase Physician Satisfaction and Engagement
This session, taught by the CEO of a top performing hospital will focus on concrete, practical approaches for engaging physicians in the quality work of the hospital.

Disclosure in Unanticipated Outcomes: Increasing Transparency and Accountability
Strengthening transparency, patient centerdness and overall ethical performance are key challenges for today's healthcare managers.  This interactive session provides an opportunity for participants to examine disclosure from a variety of perspectives, and to learn approaches to increase transparency when an unanticipated outcome occurs.

The Business Case for HAI: Impact on Costs and Margins
Engaging the C-Suite in the work on Infection Control has been described as 'an uphill battle'.  This session will focus on approaches to effectively communicate the costs associated with infection control in general, and hospital acquired infections in particular.

Leadership Challenges: Holding Managers Accountable
One of the more challenging aspects of leadership is delegation, and holding front line managers accountable for key outcomes.  This session will focus on strategies to improve accountability across all levels of the organization.

Strategic Marketing
This session will prepare participants with the skills necessary to translate marketplace data into information that directs strategy.  It will cover environmental assessment, consumer satisfaction, and evaluating marketing outcomes.  The session provides a practical discussion of using marketing tools for enhanced decision-making in the not-for-profit sector.

Labor and Employment Issues for Healthcare Managers
This session focuses on the major issues in human resource management, labor-management relations, and employee relations in healthcare settings.  Special emphasis will be given to unfair labor practices, grievance procedures, and special provisions for the healthcare industry of the Labor Management Relations Act.

Negotiation and Conflict Management
Participants will examine the role of power in negotiations, will learn interest-based negotiations, and will develop creative strategies for negotiating with multiple stakeholders.
