Bank of America Charitable Foundation Awards $1 Million to New Initiative That Prepares Global Leaders to Create Economic and Social Value

 
Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business today announced a new initiative to prepare current and future leaders to make responsible management decisions that create both economic and social value.
 
The Global Social Enterprise Initiative (GSEI) engages corporate, nonprofit, government, and other stakeholders to advance the understanding of social enterprise. It is led by Distinguished Professor of the Practice Bill Novelli and has had students involved in each stage of its development.
 
“The Global Social Enterprise Initiative expands upon two key aspects of Georgetown University and the McDonough School of Business: a mission to educate ethical business leaders and a tradition of service to others,” Novelli said. “As social enterprise is becoming a more significant piece of core business strategies, it is essential to study best practices, develop new research, and collaborate across sectors to prepare leaders to implement large-scale, sustainable change.”
 
At a panel to kick-off the GSEI, James Mahoney, global public policy and corporate communications executive at Bank of America, announced that the Bank of America Charitable Foundation has donated $1 million to support the initiative. The gift is among the largest donations given to Georgetown University from the banking industry.
 
“Bank of America’s success depends on getting our economy growing and creating jobs,” Mahoney said. “We are thrilled to partner with Georgetown’s new Global Social Enterprise Initiative to explore new ideas in solving our most pressing social issues.”
 
Mahoney also spoke on a panel about “Social Enterprise: The Intersection of Business, Government, and Civil Society,” with Reggie Van Lee, executive vice president, Booz Allen Hamilton; Darell Hammond, CEO, KaBOOM!; and Jim Thompson, deputy special representative for global partnerships, U.S. Department of State.
 
In addition to incorporating social enterprise throughout the business school and university, GSEI will collaborate with organizations in Washington, D.C., and across the globe. The initiative will develop best practices and advance research, teaching, outreach, and creative problem solving in the areas of global health and well-being, responsible investing, economic growth and financial security, clean-tech energy and environment, and international development.
 
Through the partnership with Bank of America, GSEI will offer an annual symposium to generate ideas for public policy and business practices to yield increased public-private partnerships, employment, and global economic stability. The first symposium is being planned for fall 2011. Other partnership activities are in planning stages.
