Growing Incivility in the Workplace

April 02, 2013

In a recent Washington Post commentary, Christine Porath, associate professor at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business, wrote about the growing prevalence of rudeness at work, and this is costing businesses money. Porath and Christine Pearson, professor of global leadership at the Thunderbird School of Management, have been studying the impact of bad behavior on the workplace for 15 years.

“Workplace incivilities push employees over the edge,” wrote Porath. “One-fourth of employees we polled across industries in 1998 said they were treated rudely by fellow employees at least once a week. By 2005, that number had risen to nearly half.”
