Peer Ambassadors
The Peer Ambassador and Leadership Program utilizes the experiences, knowledge, and leadership skills of selected upper-class students to help new students transition to Georgetown as undergraduates. Peer Ambassadors meet with prospective students, help new students with registration, and act as a point of contact for any and all questions a new student may have. Each incoming student is assigned a Peer Ambassador for their first year. Scroll down to learn more about this year’s Peer Ambassadors.
In addition to providing advice to incoming students and meeting with prospective students, Georgetown McDonough Peer Ambassadors are highly involved in other co- and extra-curricular activities. Here are some blogs written by just a few of our PAs:

In my First Year Seminar, Great Books in Finance, we read about the history of companies, the stock market, and famous investors, and I realized that people keep making the same mistakes over and over again throughout history.

What is your advice to incoming Hoyas?
Meet everyone during the first couple days of student orientation--be friendly and open. Also, remember your core beliefs and values--write yourself a letter before you go to college and give it to a best friend to hold onto until you graduate.

What is the best thing about being a Hoya?
The best thing about being a Hoya is being a member of the Georgetown community. The Georgetown community is what separates Georgetown from any other college. Name: Dana Alexa Mitchell, Class of 2015
Hometown: Gates Mills, Ohio
Major: International Business (regional, Western Europe) and Accounting, Minor: Spanish
Why Georgetown McDonough?
I chose McDonough because it seemed to be the Mecca for a person like me - strong core business curriculum that would set me up well for internships later, as well as the fact that it would provide me with the international studies background. Washington, D.C., is my favorite U.S. city, so that also factored into my decision. I also chose Georgetown McDonough because it offers a wonderful study abroad program - the one that I am on now - at ESADE in Barcelona, Spain. I could not find a program like this at any other school I explored. I am learning about my favorite subjects in an amazing foreign city while getting a completely different perspective in the classroom. What could be better? And I get to brush up on my Spanish!

What is the best thing about being a Hoya?
There are way too many. I love how a typical weekday might consist of barricades around the school because the Prime Minister of Iraq is on campus. I love how I can get a good workout in just by walking to Yates (the gym). I love that in a class of 24, the person to your right might be interning at the the White House, the person behind you could be the next Bradley Cooper, and the person to your left could actually be the Prince of Jordan. I love the basketball games. I love that we now have two mascots. I love Georgetown Day. I love homecoming weekend. I love the burgers GUGS makes that have baseball-sized patties. I love that our campus coffee shops are really witty puns. I love that my friend is also my bank teller (GUAFSCU). I love the fact that I meet amazing new people every day. I love that if you name any random language, there's bound to be a Hoya that speaks it. Fluently.
Name: Huda Ibrahim, Class of 2013
Hometown: Arlington, Va.

Why Georgetown McDonough?

What is the best thing about being a Hoya?
Well, besides being rocks in another language, one of the best parts of being a Hoya is probably the community. From hallmates who become family, professors who become mentors, chaplains who become lifelong friends, Georgetown is a community within a community within a community. The people who you meet will stay with you for a lifetime, in the good way, and make you proud to be a Hoya.

What is your advice to incoming Hoyas?
My advice to incoming Hoyas is to never feel intimidated. Regardless of class, gender, age, etc., we are all Georgetown and we are all a family. We were all chosen individually to be Hoyas because Georgetown believed that we have something good to contribute to this family. So, we are not threats to each other and no Hoya is better than another; we are all different and we are here to support each other in our achievements.

The most defining classroom moment for me was when my group became a finalist for the First Year Seminar case competition. We had to develop a social media strategy for One Global Economy. Getting the opportunity to be a finalist presenting an idea that I helped to develop really cemented for me that I am in the right place at Georgetown and that I have the potential to do amazing things.
Name: Kelsey Becker, Class of 2013
Hometown: Eden Prairie, Minn.
Major: International Business and Marketing
Why Georgetown McDonough?
Georgetown was exactly what I was looking for in a college - a traditional campus located right in the middle of a major city. More than that, the friendliness and enthusiasm of every student I met showed me that Georgetown would be the perfect fit for me. The courses offered at the McDonough School of Business sounded exciting, and I can remember wanting the opportunity to take as many of those classes as possible. The atmosphere of Georgetown's campus, combined with McDonough's reputation made college selection an easy choice for me, and I can't imagine being any happier!

Why do you love D.C.?
DC is such an exciting and young city. Through all of the embassies, foreign affairs, and international students, I feel like I have access to the entire world in one city. There is never a shortage of places to explore of things to do.
Name: Kevin Haack, Class of 2014
Hometown: Milwaukee, WI
Major: Finance and Accounting
What is your advice to incoming Hoyas?
I advise incoming Hoyas to be open to new things, which is extremely important during your first year here. I came to the Hilltop thinking that I knew exactly what I wanted to do during my time here, from my major to what extra-curriculars to get involved with. Two years later, I now have a different major than I planned and I found awesome activities that I hadn't even considered joining upon my arrival at Georgetown. Freshman year is a time to try new things and find out what you are interested in, so take advantage of this opportunity with an open mind!

I was always hesitant to go to a professor's office hours because I didn't want to come across as not being able to understand the material. However, after going to my Business Statistics office hours freshman year, I realized that the professors want you to come see them not only to discuss class material, but to get to know you as a person. Now attending professor's office hours is one of my favorite things to do - not only do I further my classroom knowledge but I also develop personal skills which will help me in the workplace.

One of the most defining moments for me was my first marketing class at Georgetown. I had my heart set on a finance major and had always dismissed marketing just advertising. After my first class all that changed. I loved it. I considered switching tracks completely and only majoring in marketing, before realizing that there was no reason I couldn't combine the two. Find your interests and pursue them no matter how disparate they may seem.

Last fall, I had the privilege of taking Professor Long’s management course. It was fascinating to learn about the interworkings of companies and the tremendous amount of time and effort it takes to manage the various facets of running a business. One experience that stands out in my mind was the final project that required us to visit a company’s office, talk to the executives, and analyze the management structure and style for both its successes and drawbacks. It was a challenging process that opened my eyes to the creativity and dedication of those that run both corporate offices and small businesses, and it inspired me to want to start a business of my own in the future.

My Alternative Spring Break experience, (working with migrant farm workers and their families in Immokalee, Fla.) to this day, has been both the most transformative and educational moment. I realized that even though I was interested in business, it didn't mean that I only had to do business. Everything I learned is too much to write in a few sentences, but I realized that my passion for education does not mean I have to be a teacher. I can use my business education to contribute to education reform and Latino movements.
