David Fogel currently serves as co-founder and senior advisor of IndexIQ, which was sold to New York Life in 2015. IndexIQ is an exchange-traded fund (ETF) issuer with over $4 billion in assets that he co-founded with another Georgetown Law alumnus in 2006. Fogel co-founded SmartPortfolio.com Inc. in 1999 with three other Georgetown alumni and later served as a senior executive for TheStreet.com, which acquired SmartPortfolio.com in 2000. He began his career as a corporate attorney at Sullivan & Cromwell LLP in 1997.
Fogel received a B.S., summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, from the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service; a J.D., magna cum laude and Order of the Coif, from Georgetown University Law Center, where he served on the Georgetown Law Journal; and an MBA from the McDonough School of Business. He is an adjunct professor in entrepreneurship at Georgetown Law and an Entrepreneur-in-Residence at McDonough.
Fogel serves on the advisory board of The Wall Street Alliance and was the recipient of both the Alumni Association Entrepreneur of the Year Award and the School of Business Dean’s Award in 2016. He also is a member of the Board of Trustees of Freedom House.
