  • David A. Thomas, Dean

    David A. Thomas is Dean and William R. Berkley Chair of Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business, where he is committed to creating transformational educational experiences that prepare students to become principled and globally minded leaders poised to serve both business and society.

    Thomas, who joined Georgetown McDonough in August 2011 following a two-decade career at Harvard Business School, has enhanced academic and professional opportunities for the school’s undergraduate and graduate students. Such efforts include a major redesign of the MBA curriculum, expansion of the MBA career management activities, and enhancement of academic and professional opportunities for undergraduate students, such as the addition of the Global Business Experience for juniors and the growth of the popular First Year Seminar for our freshmen as a permanent set of courses. In addition, Thomas formed a task force associated with the Aspen Institute to infuse and integrate liberal learning into the undergraduate curriculum and established a Professional Development Center through the Office of Undergraduate Programs.

    During his administration, Thomas also has increased the diversity of the school’s faculty among women, under-represented minorities, and international professors. He also has more than doubled the number of endowed faculty positions. Thomas has launched new research initiatives with a 42 percent increase in research funding, grown the Executive Education program revenues by 400 percent, and increased giving to the school – raising the endowment by 44 percent. In the last three years, Thomas has revised the school’s $100 capital campaign goal up to $125 million, of which the school currently has raised over $110 million. 

    Partnering with the Washington, D.C., community, Thomas is a member of the Federal City Council and has served as co-chair of the District of Columbia Mayor’s Economic Development Strategy Initiative. In 2014, the Washington Business Journal recognized him as one of the top Minority Business Leaders.

    Dr. Thomas received a Bachelor of Arts in Administrative Sciences and Master and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Organizational Behavior from Yale University. He also holds a Master of Arts in Organizational Psychology from Columbia University. He currently is a member of the Board of Governors for the American Red Cross, the Board of Directors of DTE Energy, and the Estoril Conferences Advisory Board. He also is an industry advisor for Brightwood Capital Advisors.

  • Luc Wathieu, Deputy Dean

    As the McDonough School of Business’ deputy dean, Luc Wathieu leads faculty and academic initiatives and advances the school’s efforts to create distinctive excellence in teaching and research. He joined the business school faculty in 2010 as associate professor of marketing and in 2012 was the recipient of the school’s Faculty Research Award.

    In his research, Wathieu combines economics and psychology to understand consumer engagement — the motivation of consumers to interact with firms and actively explore the relevance of products and benefits. Much of his research focuses on understanding how consumers develop and break habits and brand loyalties. He also examines the engagement effects of specific pricing and communications formats. His work has appeared in leading academic journals and was also featured multiple times in the Harvard Business Review. He serves on the editorial boards of the five academic journals and was an associate editor for Management Science.

    Prior to his arrival at Georgetown University, he was associate dean of faculty and the Ferrero Chair in International Marketing at ESMT European School of Management in Technology in Berlin. He previously was an associate and assistant professor at the Harvard Business School for 10 years and taught at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology's School of Business and Management. His teaching experience includes undergraduate, MBA, Ph.D., and executive education courses in marketing management, pricing, branding, and communications.

    Wathieu holds a Ph.D. and an M.Sc. in management from INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France. He also has an M.Sc. in economics from the University of Namur in Belgium, where he is originally from. In 1997 he completed the Management Development Program at Harvard Business School.

  • Paul Almeida, Deputy Dean for Executive Education and Innovation

    Paul Almeida is deputy dean for executive education and innovation at Georgetown’s McDonough School of Business, focusing on strategy, academics, public relations, and business development. He also is a professor of strategy and international business and co-director of the Georgetown-ESADE Global Executive MBA program.

    Almeida’s research examines innovation, knowledge management, alliances, and informal collaborations across firms and countries and has been published in several leading journals. Almeida has conducted executive education and corporate seminars with numerous organizations in the United States and around the world, including Microsoft, Gucci, Rolls Royce, IBM, Samsung, Sprint, the World Bank, OPIC, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, AREVA, National Public Radio, and the Social Security Administration. He received a Ph.D. and a master’s degree from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, India.

  • Doreen Amorosa, Associate Dean and Managing Director, MBA Career Center

    Doreen Amorosa has responsibility for the MBA Career Center, which assists students with everything from identifying career options to being hired after graduation. She previously was the vice president for global recruitment and workforce planning at American Express, where she was accountable for recruitment strategy for hiring activity globally up to the director level, as well as service delivery of recruitment in the United States.

    From 2006 to late 2007, Amorosa was the vice president of resourcing at ICI, where she was the global recruitment leader for more than 5,000 hires annually. Previously, she led talent acquisition at Avaya. In that position, she was accountable for 3,000 management and university hires annually. Amorosa joined Avaya after spending more than 20 years at Merrill Lynch. In her last position there, she was responsible for development and delivery of recruitment infrastructure, temporary staffing, retention and work/life programs, diversity initiatives, and HR policy.

    Amorosa received an MBA from Seton Hall University with a concentration in management and industrial relations and a B.S. in management with a minor in psychology from Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business. Additionally, she is a former member of the Advisory Board for the McDonough School of Business and is a senior advisor to the recruiting roundtable of the Corporate Executive Board.

  • Linn Deavers, Associate Dean and Chief Operating Officer

    Linn Deavers has been an administrator at the McDonough School of Business since 1984. As associate dean and chief operating officer, she has oversight for financial management, business operations, human resources, technology, faculty services, and building management. The school has an annual operating budget of more than $50 million and employs approximately 200 full-time faculty and staff. Deavers previously served as the school's chief financial officer and executive director of administrative and financial services. She also has served as treasurer of the Georgetown University chapter of Phi Beta Kappa since 1993.

    Prior to joining the university, Deavers was employed as a public information specialist for the Bureau of Consular Affairs, U.S. Department of State. She holds an MBA from Georgetown University and a B.A. in Spanish from the University of Virginia.

  • Patricia Grant, Interim Senior Associate Dean, Undergraduate Program

    As the interim senior associate dean for the Undergraduate Program at Georgetown's McDonough School of Business, Patricia Grant is responsible for academic advising; creation of new global programs; implementation of academic policies; development of partnerships with non-profit and for-profit organizations; continuous improvement of the undergraduate curriculum; and donor development to support new initiatives.

    For more than 20 years, Patricia Grant has worked in a variety of administrative roles at Binghamton and Temple Universities, as well as the University of Pennsylvania, where she obtained her master’s and doctoral degrees in higher education management, and Cornell University, where she earned a liberal arts degree. While at Temple University, she was engaged in academic affairs work as the interim director of graduate studies and as the director of undergraduate studies within the College of Education. In this capacity, she was charged with the academic and professional development of approximately 2,500 graduate and undergraduate students. Throughout her career, she has worked alongside faculty to improve curricula while also developing proposals for new programs and degrees. Grant also has served as an adjunct professor, teaching a range of topics from research design to organizational change.

  • Chris M. Kormis, Associate Dean and Chief Marketing Officer

    Chris M. Kormis leads, develops, and implements strategies for the school’s marketing and communications efforts. The school’s alumni, corporate, and community relations initiatives also report up to Kormis. She is the brand manager and primary spokesperson, after the dean, to all external audiences. Kormis also coordinates stewardship activities with the university’s advancement office.

    Kormis previously served for 18 years at The George Washington University, departing as assistant vice president for University Relations. Since joining Georgetown McDonough in 2009, she and her team have increased media mentions from 290 in 2008 to more than 11,000 in 2014, launched a new graphic identity for the school, and consolidated advertising and brand management. The school has earned several awards for its media relations efforts, its Georgetown Business magazine, and other publications

    She earned a B.A. from Duquesne University and an M.A. in English, professional writing, and rhetoric from George Mason University. She speaks at conferences and has published articles on marketing and communications for higher education.

  • Matthew Lewis, Chief of Staff and Director, Strategy

    Matthew Lewis is both the principal advisor to the Dean on the school’s important strategic and operational matters, as well as to the senior leader responsible for a team that provides strategic planning for innovation and technology-enhanced learning and the creation of new academic programs on campus, online, and globally.

    As chief of staff, Lewis plans and steers execution of the Dean’s vision and agenda as it relates to institutional initiatives, special projects, and policy development. Serving as the Dean’s primary liaison with community and university constituencies, he sets the tone for communications emanating from the Dean’s office. He also leads the school’s corporate, government, and community relations area.

    In his role of director of strategy, Lewis works with the Deputy Dean for Innovation on a variety of school-wide initiatives that relate to the intellectual substance of the curricular and research functions of the school as it reshapes business education for the 21st century. Specifically, he works with the Deputy Dean to ensure that the school’s curricula includes innovative, high-impact, and inclusive pedagogies, assignment design, and meaningful assessment of student learning and student engagement.

    Lewis first came to the university as the assistant director of external relations for the business school, a new role for the school that allowed him to help shape the areas of alumni engagement, annual giving, and corporate partnerships. Prior to employment at Georgetown, Lewis worked with the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee under Chairman Patrick J. Leahy. He currently is enrolled in Georgetown McDonough’s MBA program and is a graduate of the University of Michigan with a B.A. in Political Science, specializing in Middle Eastern Studies. 

  • Prashant Malaviya, Senior Associate Dean, MBA Programs

    Prashant Malaviya, senior associate dean for MBA programs and associate professor of marketing, came to Georgetown in 2008 after nine years at INSEAD, France. Prior to INSEAD, he held an appointment at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and visiting professorships at the Wharton School, as the Titan Industries Professor at ALBA Graduate Business School in Athens, Greece, and at the Kellogg School of Management.

    A consumer psychologist by training, Malaviya's research focuses on understanding how consumers use information to make product judgments and consumption decisions and has been published in leading marketing journals including, Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Consumer Psychology, Journal of Marketing, Journal of Marketing Research, and Psychology & Marketing. He has taught courses to Executives, MBA, and Undergraduate students on marketing management, marketing strategy, brand management, customer focus, consumer behavior, and related topics.

    He was awarded the Emerald Citation of Excellence for publishing “one of the top 50 management articles in 2007,” was a finalist for the Best MBA Core Teacher award at INSEAD and was named Outstanding Reviewer by the Journal of Consumer Research. He currently serves on the editorial review board of the Journal of Consumer Psychology. Prior to entering the world of academia (and consumers), Malaviya worked in India as an engineer at Tata Motors and as a marketing analyst at Nestlé.

    Malaviya holds a Ph.D. in Marketing with a minor in Social Psychology from Northwestern University, an MBA from the University of New Delhi, and a bachelor’s degree in metallurgical engineering from the Institute of Technology, Varansai.

  • William R. Baber, Accounting Area Coordinator, Robert E. McDonough Professor and Professor of Accounting

    William Baber has more than 30 years of experience teaching both financial and managerial accounting at Columbia, George Washington, the University of Rochester (Simon), Dartmouth (Tuck), Carnegie Mellon, Duke (Fuqua), and Georgetown. Prior to entering academics, he worked as an auditor and a consultant with Arthur Young & Company (now Ernst and Young) in Washington, D.C.

    Baber received a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh, and a B.S. from Bucknell University. His research, which addresses accounting and public policy issues, is published in a number of academic journals including The Accounting Review,Journal of Accounting Research, Journal of Accounting and Economics, the Review of Accounting Studies, and the Journal of Accounting and Public Policy. Baber has served on the editorial boards of The Accounting Review, Accounting Horizons, Auditing: A Journal of Practice and Theory, Journal of Accounting and Public Policy, Journal of Public Budgeting, Accounting and Financial Management, and the International Journal of Accounting Literature.

  • Turan Bali, Finance Area Coordinator, Robert S. Parker Chair and Professor of Business Administration

    Turan G. Bali is the Robert S. Parker Chair and Professor of Business Administration at the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University. He specializes in asset pricing, risk management, fixed income securities, and financial derivatives. A founding member of the Society for Financial Econometrics, Bali has worked on consulting projects sponsored by major financial institutions and government organizations in the U.S. and other countries. In addition, he currently serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, the Journal of Banking and Finance, the Journal of Futures Markets, the Review of Financial Economics, the Journal of Portfolio Management, and the Journal of Risk. 

    With more than 50 published articles in economics and finance journals, Bali’s work has appeared in the Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, Review of Financial Studies, Journal of Monetary Economics, Management Science, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Journal of Business, Review of Economics and Statistics and many others. He also serves as an ad-hoc reviewer for numerous journals in economics, finance, statistics, and operations research.

    Bali received his Ph.D. from the Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York in 1999. Before joining Georgetown University, he was the David Krell Chair Professor of Finance at Baruch College and the Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York. He also held visiting faculty positions at New York University and Princeton University, reviewed books for several publishers, and served on the review committees of the National Science Foundation, Research Grants Council of Hong Kong, Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey, and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. 

  • Robin Dillon-Merrill, Operations and Information Management Area Coordinator, Professor of Operations

    Robin L. Dillon-Merrill seeks to understand and explain how and why people make the decisions that they do under conditions of uncertainty and risk. This research specifically examines critical decisions that people have made following near-miss events in situations with severe outcomes including hurricane evacuation, terrorism, cybersecurity, and NASA mission management.

    Professor Dillon-Merrill has received research funding from the National Science Foundation, NASA, the Department of Defense, and the Department of Homeland Security through USC’s National Center for Risk and Economic Analysis for Terrorism Events. She has served as a risk analysis and project management expert on several National Academies Committees including the review of the New Orleans regional hurricane protection projects and the application of risk analysis techniques to securing the Department of Energy’s special nuclear materials. She also serves as the co-chair of the Georgetown University Environment Initiative.

    She has a B.S./M.S. from the University of Virginia in Systems Engineering and a Ph.D. from Stanford University. From 1993 to 1995, she worked as a systems engineer for the Fluor Daniel Corporation. 

  • Rebecca Hamilton, Marketing Area Coordinator, Michael and Robin Psaros Endowed Chair in Business Administration and Professor of Marketing

    Rebecca Hamilton joined the McDonough School of Business as Professor of Marketing in 2014 after 14 years on the faculty at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business.

    Hamilton’s research focuses on consumer decision making and the effects of consumers’ information processing strategies on their attitudes and choices and has been published in top journals such as the Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Marketing Research, and Harvard Business Review. She received the Erin Anderson Award for an Emerging Female Scholar and Mentor in 2011 and was recognized by the Marketing Science Institute as a Young Scholar in 2007. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Association for Consumer Research, as an associate editor for the Journal of Consumer Research and Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, and on the Editorial Review Boards of the Journal of Marketing, Journal of Marketing Research, the International Journal of Research in Marketing, and the Journal of Interactive Marketing.

    Hamilton holds a B.S. in Policy Analysis from Cornell University and a Ph.D. from the MIT Sloan School of Management.

  • John Mayo, Strategy Area Coordinator, Professor of Economics, Business and Public Policy

    John W. Mayo is a professor of economics, business and public policy in Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business. His research interests lie in the areas of industrial organization, regulation and antitrust, and, more generally, the application of microeconomics to public policy. He has published some 50 articles in economics, law, and public policy journals including the RAND Journal of Economics, the Journal of Law and Economics, the Yale Journal on Regulation, the Review of Economics and Statistics, the Journal of Industrial Economics, and the Journal of Regulatory Economics. He also is the author of numerous book chapters and monographs, as well as co-author of a comprehensive text on “Government and Business: The Economics of Antitrust and Regulation.”

    Mayo has held a number of senior administrative positions at Georgetown including a term as the dean of the McDonough School of Business from 2002-2004. Additionally, he has been the chief economist, U.S. Senate Small Business Committee (Democratic Staff) and has served as an advisor and consultant to both public and private agencies including the U.S. Department of Justice, the Federal Trade Commission, the U.S. Department of Energy, AT&T, MCI, Sprint, Verizon, the Tennessee Valley Authority and Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

    Mayo has participated in a number of regulatory and antitrust proceedings and has testified before both federal and state legislative and regulatory bodies on a number of matters, including monopolization, price fixing, mergers, and regulatory pricing policy. His research and or interviews have appeared in the popular press, including the Washington Post, New York Times, Financial Times, USA Today and the San Francisco Chronicle.

    Mayo also serves as the Executive Director for the Center on Business and Public Policy, which he founded on in 2002. The Center seeks to engage scholars, policymakers and business people in dialog and debate regarding modern issues at the nexus of business and public policy.

  • Marcia Miceli, Management Area Coordinator, Professor

    Marcia Miceli is the co-author of the books Whistle-blowing in Organizations (2008, Taylor/Francis, with J. P. Near and T. M. Dworkin) and Blowing the Whistle (1992, Lexington Books, with J.P.Near). Her research interests also include compensation systems, and her work has appeared in leading journals such as Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Administrative Science Quarterly, Journal of Applied Psychology, Organization Science, and Personnel Psychology.

    Miceli serves as a member of the editorial board of Organization Science and has served as a member of the editorial boards of Journal of Management and Academy of Management Review. She was a member of the faculty at the Fisher College of Business at Ohio State University from 1981 to 1998. While there, she served as academic director of graduate programs in Labor and Human Resources, chair of the department of Management and Human Resources, interim academic director of the MBA program, and senior associate dean, and was appointed Hoyt Professor of Management in 1998.

    Miceli holds a DBA in Personnel and Organizational Behavior, an MBA in Personnel and Industrial Relations, and a B.A. in Psychology, all from Indiana University.
