Sophomores

Declare Your Major

Sophomores should declare their major by March of their sophomore year. We recommend familiarizing yourself with the major requirements along with utilizing the What-If function on your Degree audit in MyAccess.

If you have additional questions about declaring a major, please feel free to reach out to your academic dean.

Visit the Career Development Center

Today’s students have more career options than ever. Students must be acutely aware of their own strengths, skills, motivations, and values to develop a sustainable career plan that meets the needs of an ever-changing job market. The McDonough Undergraduate Career Development Center supports students in this process of self-discovery, career education, and network-building to create a career that will carry them throughout life.

Attend SURF Info Session

Each summer, the McDonough Summer Undergraduate Research Fund (SURF) offers students the opportunity to apply for a grant to conduct research with a Georgetown McDonough professor on a topic of interest. Upon completion of the research project, students present their findings at the McDonough Undergraduate Research Symposium and are prepared to submit their projects to scholarly journals.

Attend Summer Global Program Info Session

The McDonough School of Business offers customized summer programs to allow students to further their global experience while completing two business courses — six Georgetown credits — at well-known institutions abroad. Programs are four to six weeks long, and courses are taught by faculty from partner universities and Georgetown McDonough.

Global Business Fellows Program

The Global Business Fellows (GBF) program is a cohort-based initiative designed for McDonough students interested in expanding their understanding of international business and public policy on a macro level. The curriculum also allows students flexibility to choose from one of the available business majors and work with a designated academic adviser to tailor course selection to their individual strengths and interests. Students apply in the fall of their sophomore year.

Explore Study Abroad Options

Georgetown believes that study abroad is an integral part of a student’s academic experience. The Office of Global Education offers options for study abroad in 40 countries.

Smart Start Program

Smart Start is a signature program in partnership with PwC offering a series of workshops, panels, and events that equip a diverse pool of first- and second-year students with the tools for academic, personal, and professional success. In keeping with the Jesuit ideal of “women and men for others,” participants are mentored by peers and by Georgetown alumni who work at PwC.

Peer Ambassadors

The Peer Ambassador and Leadership Program utilizes the experiences, knowledge, and leadership skills of selected upper-class students to help new students transition to Georgetown McDonough. Peer Ambassadors meet with prospective students, help new students with registration, and act as a point of contact for any and all questions a new student may have.

Alumni Connections

There are many opportunities for McDonough students to connect with alumni who have made great strides within their professional fields. Alumni programming for McDonough undergraduates includes Host a Hoya, a one day job shadow opportunity during school break. Alumni mentoring is also facilitated through HoyaGateway, Georgetown’s internal portal that connects students with alumni all over the globe. Our alumni also host students in connection with the McDonough Career Development Center for DC area “Fridays in the Field” and national “Treks” to their workplaces, introducing students to fellow Hoyas at their companies for informal networking.
