EML Application Q&A with Assistant Dean Nita Swinsick
What does Georgetown look for in an EML applicant?
We look for applicants who are aligned with our values and our mission to have a positive impact on society, who are collaborative and team players, and who we believe will add value to their class and to the larger Georgetown community.
Who should write my letters of recommendation?
We highly recommend that you select individuals who you report to or have reported to in previous organizations. If you are an entrepreneur, you may ask high-profile clients to write your recommendations. Remember, your recommenders should be able to provide specific examples of your work quality, team dynamic, and leadership skills. The best recommendations are the ones that are detailed and specific instead of vague and general.
What should I write in my personal statement?
Your personal statement should be an introspective journey that is unique to you and to your motivations for wanting to complete a graduate program. Take the time to reflect and write something that is truly unique about you, your accomplishments, your drive, and your expectations.
How can I learn more about the program?
The best way to learn about the program and if it is the right fit for you is to attend one of our events and to sit in on a class.
How can I prepare for my interview?
The interview is your chance to build on your application. It consists of a dialogue to engage you in a genuine and authentic way and to evaluate how you would fit within the Georgetown community. My advice is to just be yourself, and make sure that you also take the opportunity to evaluate us and ask us any questions.
What should I highlight in my resume?
Your resume should clearly demonstrate career progression and your increase in responsibilities. Try to quantify your accomplishments by including information such as percentage of revenue increase, number of people you lead, and the size of the budget you manage.
How important is my undergraduate degree GPA?
The Admissions Committee takes a holistic approach to admissions, which means that while all components of the application are evaluated and taken into consideration, no one piece is more important than another. Your undergraduate GPA will be looked at together with your professional achievements, recommendations, master's degree transcripts, etc.
How long does the admissions process take?
We have a rolling admissions process which means that, until the final application deadline, we will review applications when they are submitted. After you’ve submitted your application (if everything is complete), you will hear back from us within 1-3 weeks to let you know whether or not you have been invited to interview. If you are invited to interview, it will take us another 1-3 weeks to get back to you with a final decision.
