Georgetown McDonough Provides Input on U.N. Sustainability Document

Representatives from Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business, including Norean Sharpe, senior associate dean and director of the Undergraduate Program; Jose Guerrero-Cusumano, associate professor; Guarav Bhalla, adjunct professor; Miguel Cuunjieng (MBA ’15); and James P. Moore, Jr., managing director of the Business, Society, and Public Policy Initiative, contributed to a white paper, “The United Nations Global Goals for Sustainable Development: Introducing a New Age for a More Secure and Fulfilling Human Prosperity.”

The Caux Round Table, a network of business executives and thought leaders focused on moral capitalism, submitted the white paper to the U.N. Secretariat and U.N. delegates at the opening of the U.N. General Assembly and the concurrent U.N. Sustainable Development Summit in late September.

“The recent meetings at the United Nations to launch a new agenda to address economic sustainable development are a critical new chapter in our global dialog,” Moore said. “The input Georgetown McDonough provided underscored the critical importance of the collaboration of business, government, and society.  Solutions to the challenges we face cannot be addressed by governments alone.”

The white paper had its roots in a closed meeting of 25 academic, corporate, and nonprofit representatives at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in July. As part of the meeting, Sharpe, Guerrero-Cusumano, Bhalla, Cuunjieng, and Moore discussed global economic sustainability as it relates to the United Nations’ Global Sustainable Project launched in Rio de Janeiro in 2013.

The Caux Round Table held meetings around the world, including in Bangkok, Mexico City, London, and Johannesburg.
