The Internet’s Role in Maintaining U.S. Global Leadership in Innovation

A Symposium Presented by the Georgetown Center for Business and Public Policy, June 10

WHAT: Attend “The Internet and Communications Regulation: A Policy and Technology Symposium,” hosted by the Center for Business and Public Policy at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business on Tuesday June 10, 2014. The free two-hour event begins at noon and is the first in Georgetown’s Evolution of Regulation and Innovation Project.

WHY: As the Internet economy expands in both size and importance to overall GDP, lawmakers and regulators must craft policy decisions that protect – as well as encourage – the evolution of U.S. innovation. A critical tool for any staff member on the Hill or at agencies tasked with oversight of the affected industries is a thorough understanding of the fast-changing technologies powering the Internet and the economics of its evolving business models. The symposium’s panel will discuss how and why the Internet impacts consumer welfare, small businesses, and U.S. dominance in innovation.

Panelists include:

  • Blair Levin, communications and society fellow, The Aspen Institute

  • Patrick Gilmore, chief technology officer, Markley Group

  • Brent Olson, vice president of public policy, AT&T

  • Robert D. Atkinson, president, The Information Technology & Innovation Foundation

  • Jeff Campbell, vice president, Cisco Government Affairs
