Nudgeapalooza 2019

Nudgeapalooza 2019, an annual behavioral and data science symposium hosted by Deloitte and Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business, will bring academics, business leaders, and policy experts together for the opportunity to share and learn about the latest insights and strategies for ethically “nudging” positive behavior change. This one-day conference, on Monday, Dec. 9, will be held in Fisher Colloquium.

This year’s theme is “Ethics in a Data-Driven World,” and will feature discussions that focus on the intersection of behavioral insights, artificial intelligence, and the nuanced ethical considerations leaders must make as our capabilities in both fields advance.

“Nudges” refer to designing choice environments in ways that remove barriers and go with the grain of human psychology to prompt better behaviors and smarter decisions on the parts of citizens, employees, patients, and customers. As nudging becomes more common both in and out of government, so do questions about how behavioral insights can be used both ethically and unethically.

The one-day conference will include interactive sessions and several keynote talks:

  • Professor Dan Ariely, James B. Duke Professor of Psychology and Behavioral Economics at Duke University, is founding member of the Center for Advanced Hindsight, and an expert on the forces that influence ethical human behavior and the irrational ways in which we all behave.
  • Professor Don Moynihan, McCourt Chair at Georgetown’s McCourt School of Public Policy, examines the behavioral effects of efforts to improve the public sector through government reform.
  • Professor Catherine Tinsley, Raffini Family Professor of Management at Georgetown’s McDonough School of Business and Faculty Director of the Georgetown Women’s Leadership Institute, is an expert on gender intelligent leadership, gender parity, workforce development, negotiations, and decision making.
  • Associate Professor David Pizarro, Associate Professor of Psychology at Cornell University and Chief Science Officer at BEWorks, conducts research on moral judgment, moral intuitions, and biases that affect moral judgments.
