Is Foreign Investment Good for America?

The Center for Business and Public Policy at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business will present “Foreign Investment: Is it Good for America?” as part of its Georgetown on the Hill series, which brings the center’s work to Capitol Hill for tutorials on issues of public policy.

Investment is the lifeblood of economic growth. Foreign investment in the United States creates growth and jobs, but China, the richest source of foreign capital, is in some quarters suspect and unwelcome. U.S. foreign investment allows businesses to build new markets abroad. Some argue that this may cost U.S. jobs, others believe that it actually creates jobs and improves wages and benefits for those working for U.S. multinationals. The panelists will explore the controversial aspects of this very important element of U.S. commercial policy.

The forum will feature Linda Andros, legislative counsel for United Steelworkers; Christine Bliss, assistant U.S. trade representative for services and investment; J. Bradford Jensen, professor of international business and economics at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business and senior policy scholar at the Georgetown Center for Business and Public Policy; and John Veroneau, former deputy U.S. trade representative.

The panel will be moderated by Bob Vastine, senior industry fellow at the Georgetown Center for Business and Public Policy
