With the move to host an in-person Commencement ceremony for the Class of 2021 at Nationals Park next month, we know you have a lot of questions. While we thank you
for your patience as details come together, I wanted to take this opportunity to share
what we do know and outline our additional activities in order to help you and your loved
ones plan for this special occasion.
TROPAIA
We will begin our celebration of the Class of 2021 with our virtual Tropaia exercises at
11 a.m. EDT on Saturday, May 22, 2021, which will be live-streamed on the
Georgetown McDonough Facebook page. Tropaia is our opportunity to come together
as the McDonough Undergraduate community, hear from faculty and fellow students,
and recognize many of your outstanding accomplishments. We will share additional
details as we approach the event.
COMMENCEMENT
As President DeGioia announced last week, there will be one ceremony for all four
undergraduate schools at 10 a.m. EDT on Monday, May 24, 2021, at Nationals Park
here in Washington, D.C. The ceremony is expected to last two hours.
Each graduate will be able to request up to two tickets for loved ones to attend the in-
person ceremony. For those unable to attend, it also will be live-streamed by the university. We will share more details on how to access the feed in the coming weeks.
We are extremely grateful to the Nationals for allowing Georgetown to use the park on a
day in between two Major League Baseball games. While the ceremony will include
many of the traditional elements of a formal academic ceremony, stadium rules and the
timing within the baseball season do not allow for a traditional commencement stage or
a procession of faculty and graduates. Graduates will be individually recognized by
name from their seats. Each graduating senior, regardless of whether attending in
person or not, will have their name read aloud during the ceremony, accompanied by
their name and photo displayed on the jumbotron and other screens throughout the
park.
Therefore, it is critical that you submit your photo and other information to the
McDonough School of Business Events Team for this recognition presentation. You
received an individual link from msbevents@georgetown.edu in regard to your individual MarchingOrder slide log-in. The deadline to submit a photo and message is this
FRIDAY, APRIL 30. In addition, there will be numerous photo opportunities throughout
the park to take individual photos and connect with leadership from your school.
While we strongly suggest students wear academic regalia to the ceremony, it is not
required to participate. If you still wish to purchase academic regalia or any other
commemorative items, the Georgetown University Bookstore currently is taking orders
for shipment.
Colleagues across Georgetown continue to develop the process for ticketing for
Commencement with the Nationals organization, so please look for upcoming
communications with additional details around guest registration. All guests will be
required to follow public health guidelines and DC Travel Guidance. (Please note that
D.C. may adjust its travel guidance at any time before May 24.)
Accommodation requests should be submitted using this form as soon as possible. A
good-faith effort will be made to fulfill requests made after May 10, 2021.
Please continue to follow the Commencement website and Frequently Asked Questions
page, which will be updated as additional information becomes available.
Thank you for your patience as we prepare for this in-person celebration that
exemplifies your years of hard work while recognizing the tremendous journey and
perseverance you showed over the past year. I look forward to our Tropaia awards
recognition and hope to see you and your family at Nats Park on the 24th.
All the best,
Patricia Grant
