Summer Internship Spotlight: Brianna McCoy (MSF’23): Deloitte

Each year, Georgetown McDonough students spend their summers in Washington, D.C., across the nation, and around the world working in corporate, nonprofit, and government organizations. Meet a few of our graduate and undergraduate students in our 2022 Summer Internship Spotlight series.

Brianna McCoy (MSF’23) Accounting and Internal Controls Intern, Deloitte

Tell us about your summer internship.

This summer I interned for Deloitte in the Risk and Financial Advisory Division. I specifically worked on the Accounting and Internal Controls team and focused on insurance firms. Although my team was mainly remote, I was given the chance to go in person to our headquarters and meet other interns as well as full-time employees throughout the summer. Deloitte currently operates in a hybrid model where professionals can go into the office as they please, but the firm does an excellent job hosting events to bring large groups of professionals together.

How did your internship relate to your professional or personal interests?

Starting at Georgetown with limited real-world work experience, I kept my career options open and looked into a wide variety of internships. My only requirement was that I wanted to work with clients on a daily or weekly basis because I love the social aspect of business and getting to meet new people. My internship at Deloitte was exactly that. I worked with multiple teams and multiple clients, which provided the opportunity to get to know someone new almost every day. I am currently in the stage of narrowing down exactly what career I want, but Deloitte offers an extensive number of services in various industries, which will give me the opportunity to eventually determine what I want to do.

How did you find the internship?

My brother currently works at Deloitte – he heard about the internship experience through his coworkers and emailed me the link to apply.

What’s the most interesting or impactful thing you worked on during your internship?

The client I worked for is worldwide and I was lucky enough to have a role on our international team. It was an amazing experience to sit in on calls with so many foreign countries and work with both Deloitte professionals and professionals in other firms. The opportunity to work among so many experienced individuals in so many realms of the business world was definitely a highlight of my internship.

What did a typical day look like?

Monday through Thursday I attended numerous meetings, whether they were internal status updates or working with our client through current issues. In between meetings, I worked on assigned tasks in PowerPoint or Excel that either benefitted the client or Deloitte as a firm. Any down time was spent networking with coworkers throughout the firm. Deloitte has many opportunities to meet new professionals throughout the week whether it’s a lunch in Midtown Manhattan or volunteering at one of the firm’s annual service events.

What advice do you have for other students?

I would encourage students to reach out to anyone and everyone that they can. Expanding your network is vital to finding what career works for you, whether it’s gathering insight or meeting someone that can recommend you for a position. Each connection is important and can impact your career path in many different ways and sometimes it’s the ones that you least expect that have the largest role in landing your dream job.
