Each year, Full-time and Evening MBA students at Georgetown’s McDonough School of Business participate in the Month of Volunteerism and engage in a friendly competition to see which cohort can log the most service hours. This year, students volunteered for more than 710 hours during the month of November.

The MBA Student Government Association (SGA) and Evening Student Government Association (ESGA) publicized service activities that ranged from sandwich-making and soup-serving to consulting projects with the Big Four consulting firms through the organization Impact Consultants.

The winning cohort — FT19 Hoya — finished with a 63% participation rate and 203 service hours. They earned $200 worth of items to donate to a charity of their choice. This year, students chose to donate their prize to the nonprofit Food & Friends, which provides specialized, healthy meals, groceries, and nutrition counseling to people living with HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other life-challenging illnesses. They were followed by FT19 Blue, with a 63% participation rate and 175 hours.

For Chris Musser (MBA’18), the SGA vice president of community, service opportunities like the Month of Volunteerism are integral to the MBA experience.

“MBA students love efficiency, and they love people. Some view these loves as irreconcilable. We do not,” Musser said. “We believe in smart service, where students serve their communities in ways that leverage their specific skills and enhance their business school learning experience.”
