Daniel Hae-Dong Lee

Daniel Hae-Dong Lee currently serves as senior vice president of business operations and transformation at Smithbucklin, a 100% employee-owned association management and professional services company. Prior to joining Smithbucklin, Lee was vice president of business strategy and operations at Ellucian, a private equity-backed software/SaaS company, leading strategic growth programs and operations excellence, and helping Ellucian to become successfully acquired by Blackstone and Vista Equity Partners in September 2021. 

Prior to his corporate executive roles, Lee worked in management consulting for 20+ years, working with C-suite executives at Fortune 100 companies, nonprofits, and federal agencies to foster innovation and introduce efficient approaches to strategic planning and operations. Lee served as head of operations at McKinsey and Company where he built a best-in-class consulting platform to enable smart growth. He also has held leadership positions at the Boston Consulting Group and Accenture, focusing on operations excellence, digital transformation, and crisis recovery. 

He served on the board of the Common Application, where as interim CIO/COO he helped revitalize the solution which processes five million applications each year for more than 800 member institutions. He also was a winner of Consulting Magazine’s Top 25 Consultants award in 2016. Currently, he serves on the board of trustees at Scholarship America, the nation’s largest nonprofit, private scholarship organization.

His coaching has been focused on helping MBAs, EMBAs, and alumni prepare for case interviews at strategy consulting companies, transition into and out of management consulting, and develop executive presentation materials for new opportunities. 

Lee has a B.S. in mechanical engineering and an M.S. in manufacturing systems engineering from the University of Virginia, an MBA from Darden Business School at the University of Virginia, and a Ph.D. in management information systems from the University of Texas at Austin.
