MBAs Rate Georgetown McDonough High in Ethics and CSR in Bloomberg Ranking

As part of the Bloomberg Businessweek ranking of MBA programs that rated Georgetown’s McDonough School of Business 17th overall, participants in the program gave the school high marks in ethics and corporate social responsibility.

“As a Jesuit school, it’s core to the Georgetown MBA experience to explore ways to succeed in business while also serving the common good,” said Prashant Malaviya, senior associate dean for MBA programs and professor of marketing. “Our innovative programs, from the leadership curriculum to our MBA certificates, ensure that our students explore ethical decision-making and their greater responsibilities beyond the bottom line, as they journey towards becoming ‘humbitious’ leaders.”

In a recent article, Bloomberg revealed the school-by-school results of a sample of survey questions. Here’s how McDonough rated:

  • 4th for programs that emphasize adherence to ethical principles, and
  • 7th for schools that emphasize the principles of corporate, social, and environmental responsibility.

Georgetown McDonough’s Full-time and Flex MBA options provide a challenging core curriculum with an emphasis on ethical leadership. Key courses include Leading Teams for Performance and Impact, which explores social intelligence through developing the self as leader, understanding culture and interpersonal differences, and leading change in the organizational context; as well as Ethical Leadership, which explores the ethical and social dimensions of business, and requires students to deeply reflect on their personal moral compass and how it would influence their relationship with business and society.

Students also have access to numerous electives in these areas, including Data and Society, Social Marketing for Global Good, Critical Conversations, Innovation through Inclusion, and Social Entrepreneurship. Intensive Learning Experiences, which span one to two weeks, include Women and Leadership and Venturing for Business and Social Value, and a new MBA Certificate in Sustainable Business explores the challenges and opportunities of making business more sustainable.
