Research: Connecting Scholarship and Practice IGRS
The Georgetown Initiative for Governance, Risk, and Society advances rigorous, relevant research at the intersection of corporate governance and risk management. As firms confront an increasingly complex range of financial, operational, technological, regulatory, geopolitical, and environmental risks, effective governance is essential to how organizations anticipate uncertainty, establish risk appetite, allocate responsibility, and build resilience.
The Initiative brings together academic scholarship and practitioner expertise to better understand how governance structures shape corporate risk-taking, oversight, and long-term performance. Drawing on interdisciplinary perspectives from finance, accounting, economics, law, and management, our research examines the roles of boards, committees, executives, incentives, and institutional frameworks in helping organizations navigate a rapidly changing business environment.
Central to this mission is creating a meaningful bridge between research and practice. Through academic studies, applied research, practitioner collaborations, and policy engagement, the Initiative seeks both to bring real-world challenges into the research process and to translate rigorous scholarship into insights that are useful to boards, senior executives, risk leaders, and policymakers. By connecting academic evidence with practical experience, the Initiative aims to advance knowledge, strengthen governance and risk oversight, and help organizations build the resilience necessary to create sustainable value.
