Novelli Wins Social Impact Award

Bill Novelli, distinguished professor of the practice and founder of the Global Social Enterprise Initiative (GSEI) at Georgetown’s McDonough School of Business, has been awarded the Passion for Caring Award by Capital Caring. The award was presented at the Passion for Caring Gala on November 11.

Capital Caring is a nonprofit organization that seeks to improve care for those facing life-limiting illness through support of patients and their families, public education, and public advocacy. It is the mid-Atlantic region’s largest hospice and palliative care organization.

Novelli received the award for his work as co-chair of the Coalition to Transform Advanced Care (C-TAC), a national organization dedicated to reforming advanced illness and end of life care by empowering consumers, changing the healthcare delivery system, improving public policies, and enhancing provider capacity. As leader of GSEI, he also oversees a partnership with Philips to explore the ways in which technology can assist the elderly to thrive in their own homes. Novelli previously served as CEO of AARP.

“Bill’s devotion to social impact, especially in the area of changing how we care for some of our most vulnerable populations, exemplifies our community’s tradition of cura personalis,” said Pietra Rivoli, Georgetown McDonough vice dean and professor of finance.

In his acceptance speech, Novelli touched on the importance of working for social impact. “There’s no magic potion for creating positive social change. No silver bullet,” he said. “We have to do it ourselves.”
