Georgetown’s MS-ESM Program Hosts Regional Sustainability and Environment Master’s Fair
Georgetown University’s Master of Science in Environment and Sustainability Management (MS-ESM) program recently hosted the inaugural DMV Sustainability and Environment Master’s Fair, which brought together universities with environment and sustainability-focused masters programs in Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.
Here, Lindsey Jamieson, associate director of marketing and recruitment for the MS-ESM program, shares her motivation for organizing the inaugural sustainability fair and offers advice to prospective students when attending admissions fairs.
Georgetown hosted the DMV Sustainability and Environment Master’s Fair with the hope of connecting students interested in the environment and sustainability with similar graduate programs in the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) area. The concept of specialized graduate school fairs is not new, but the key differentiator for the DMV Sustainability and Environment Master’s Fair was that it brought together graduate programs, specifically in the DMV area, that focus exclusively on the environment and sustainability. More than 200 people registered to attend the event, which is a testament to the demand for a fair related to this subject matter.
By attending a graduate fair with a specialized focus, like sustainability or the environment, attendees gain access to a comprehensive selection of curated programs in one convenient location. One of my favorite experiences from the night was speaking with a prospective student who flew in from Chicago to attend the event. They were excited that the fair gave them the opportunity to interact with and explore the diverse array of graduate programs related directly to their professional interest in sustainable management.
Attending a graduate school fair is one of the first steps in your postgraduate education journey. In order to maximize your time at a fair, make sure you do your research on the schools and programs that will be attending so you can decide how long you want to spend at each table. The fair is only a few hours and it goes by quickly! Once you decide on which programs’ tables you want to visit, come prepared with questions. The admissions advisors attending the fairs are highly knowledgeable on the school and program they are representing, so any and all questions are welcome. Finally, make sure you provide your contact information at each table you visit so the admissions advisors can follow up with you. It’s important that you remain in contact with the program throughout the admissions process so you can be kept informed on all upcoming events like application workshops, information sessions, class visits, and more.
Georgetown’s MS-ESM program develops leaders who prioritize protecting the planet through sustainable business practices. The DMV Sustainability and Environment Master’s Fair reinforces the mission of the MS-ESM program by bringing together individuals who are passionate about making a difference in the world. I hope that attendees left with a better understanding of the scope of graduate program opportunities available in the D.C. area that will equip them with the skill set and knowledge to succeed in their climate-centered career goals.
Universities around the country are increasing their programmatic offerings related to the environment and sustainability, and I hope to include more programs beyond the DMV area in this event in the coming year. I encourage anyone interested in pursuing a graduate degree related to the environment or sustainability to join us next year for this important event.
