M.S. in Business Analytics Class of 2024 Reports Diverse Backgrounds and Industries

A new class of M.S. in Business and Analytics students joined the Georgetown community this fall, increasing their representation of women, U.S. diversity, and military affiliation across a wide variety of industries and disciplines.

“We are always pleased to see an increase in diversity across our programs at Georgetown McDonough and the MSBA Class of 2024 is no different,” Nita Swinsick, associate dean for graduate and executive program admissions. “Their diverse experiences will bring new academic and personal perspectives to the program, and we look forward to seeing what they accomplish over the coming year and beyond.”

Of the 91 students in the cohort, 48% are female, up from 41% last year. The incoming class also hails from 49 different states across the United States, representing 53% U.S. diversity, up from 44% in the previous cohort, and 31% underrepresented minorities. The program continues to maintain a strong population of students with military affiliation at 13%.

“There is tremendous value in understanding business analytics in the workplace,” Babak Zafari, associate professor of the practice and academic director of the MSBA program. “We want our graduates to leave the program well prepared to analyze data in a way that improves practical business functions and increases performance in the workplace.”

The average age of the class is 30 with six years of prior professional experience. Students come from a variety of industries, including financial services (15%) and government (13%), in addition to careers in consumer goods and retail, education, healthcare, consulting, law, and manufacturing.

They also have strong academic standing with a median GPA of 3.38. Eight members of the class have received an advanced degree before beginning the MSBA program.

MSBA is a premier program designed specifically for technology-enhanced learning, characterized by close-knit cohorts, a dedicated career services team, and flexibility for working professionals seeking to balance their education with work and personal commitments.

The 16-month program includes a combination of synchronous and asynchronous coursework, with two long-weekend, campus-based residencies that provide integrated, hands-on activities. Students also will complete a Capstone Project that applies the program’s study of concepts, methods, and tools to a challenging business data analytics assignment with a project sponsor.

The curriculum integrates the technical aspects of data analytics with managerial business functions, with students learning to “speak the language of data.” Students will learn from expert faculty who will provide foundational skills in accounting, finance, economics, marketing, and operations through both research-based and applied solutions to real business problems.
