Q&A: Career Services in the MiM Program

Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business has announced the launch of a new Master of Science in Management (MiM) program that offers multiple opportunities for students to take charge of their careers.

Doreen Amorosa, associate dean of McDonough Career Services, explains how the program’s dedicated career services will prepare MiM students for success.

The Georgetown MiM program offers dedicated career services — why does that matter in a master’s program?

The value proposition for a student seeking a MiM degree is the successful launch to a career in business. Dedicated career services support enables that successful launch.

What career resources does the MiM program offer?

• Career Coaching: You will have access to a full-time career services professional — who works with MiM students only — who will guide you through career exploration, the interview process, and your full-time job offer negotiation.  
• Career Programming: On-demand workshops and tutorials will be offered on career clarification (career assessments), resume development, networking, behavioral interviewing, and negotiation.
• Alumni Access: The Hoya Gateway Platform will be used for access to alumni mentoring and networking.
• Full-time Job and Part-time Internship Opportunities: Students will access relevant graduate and undergraduate opportunities and events open to Georgetown students.
• “One McDonough” Approach: Where available and appropriate, students will access treks and employer events that are open to the McDonough community, such as Fridays in the Field, where students visit local companies.

Fridays are reserved for career development. What does that mean? Is this another class I have to take?

Career development starts in the first week of the program with workshops and discussions aimed at helping you explore what different lines of work feel like—what you value and what would add purpose and meaning to your life. This series continues throughout the 11-month program. You will create a personalized job search plan, which may include activities such as career exploration, career coaching, programming, workshops, alumni panel attendance, on-site employer visits, and career fair prep.

I’m not sure what I want to do after graduation. How can MiM help me?

We have designed the career curriculum to help students discover who they are and what careers and roles might make sense for them. In-class and off-campus experiences will help them explore not just what the world of business looks like but how they might contribute in their own unique way.
