Undergraduate Program Places 2nd in Poets&Quants Ranking, 1st for Career Outcomes

The Undergraduate Program at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business maintained its position as second in the nation in the annual ranking by Poets&Quants for Undergrads.

Poets&Quants, a leading online publication for graduate and undergraduate business education news, equally weighted three categories in calculating the ranking: admissions standards, academic experience, and employment outcome data. This year, Georgetown McDonough advanced to first in career outcomes, third in academic experience, and fourth in the admissions rank.

“From the moment our students start their undergraduate journey, we aim to provide a transformative educational experience focused on ethical leadership, continuous innovation, and global understanding,” said Patricia Grant, senior associate dean for the Undergraduate Program. “We are proud to be recognized by Poets&Quants as a top school in the nation for delivering on these goals as we strive to empower aspiring leaders with the skills they need to make a meaningful impact on the world around them.”

The survey data was collected both from the individual schools and through feedback from the Class of 2020. Recent graduates were surveyed on experiential components such as faculty availability, extracurricular opportunities, and accessibility of the alumni network.

“My business school classes enforced the idea of engaging in businesses that take into account the community’s well-being, which is indispensable for the betterment of the world as a whole,” said Steven Mucyo (B’20), in an interview for Poets&Quants’ Best and Brightest Business Majors. “Throughout my experience in the business school, I met various people from different parts of the world and built strong relationships that will last beyond college.”

The alumni who completed the Poets&Quants survey that contributed toward the ranking were among the first classes to fully engage with the school’s Undergraduate Career Center, which is housed in the business school and provides students with one-on-one career coaching, securing internships and jobs, connecting with alumni, and accessing other career resources at Georgetown.

The Undergraduate Program also expanded its extracurricular and cocurricular activities to provide new opportunities to engage in Jesuit traditions and leverage Georgetown’s global reputation. The class of 2020 had the opportunity to enroll in McDonough’s signature Global Business Experience elective, in addition to the Global Business Fellows program, where undergraduate business students consult for an organization abroad and then travel to the country to present their findings to executives. They also participated in unique global case competitions with universities from across the globe, as well as the signature First Year Seminar Social Impact Consulting Project to address a real-world business challenge with a local nonprofit organization.

The Undergraduate Program also takes a holistic approach to well-being, offering a variety of opportunities to nurture students’ spiritual, physical, and intellectual growth. Students are invited to weekly Wellness Wednesdays, which focus on physical, spiritual, and emotional wellness; Caffeine with the Deans and Bagels with the Deans to connect with undergraduate advising deans; and Ad Astra retreats, which are overnight retreats that guide students through reflection, learning exercises, and skill-building workshops.

“We believe in developing strong business leaders who are also good people – who care for others and lead with integrity,” said Grant. “Well-being is the core of our student experience, and we create intentional programming to ensure students gain whole-person experiences and build lasting relationships during their time at Georgetown and beyond.”

Georgetown McDonough is distinguished by its location in the global capital city of Washington, D.C., its access to the broader academic community within Georgetown University, and its strong Jesuit heritage. Within the Undergraduate Program, students gain a D.C. advantage with access to leaders and organizations spanning business, policy, government, diplomacy, nonprofits, and startups. With a focus on interdisciplinary study, students complete the Georgetown liberal arts core in addition to their business studies.

Students also have opportunities to complete academic research with professors and organizations and engage in unique co-curricular activities such as entrepreneurship pitch competitions and ongoing speaker events. A focus on the university’s Jesuit values has built a culture where students are shown how to care for one another and the common good while pursuing academic excellence, inter-religious understanding, and inclusion for all.
