Faculty Workshop Highlights Sustainability in Operations Management

Georgetown McDonough Professors Vishal Agrawal and Safak Yucel hosted the 2020 Early Career Sustainable Operations Workshop to provide research presentation and networking opportunities for early-career scholars working in sustainable operations management.

The event, held Feb. 21-23 at Georgetown’s McDonough School of Business, featured 70 academics from more than 40 institutions around the world.

“Given that several McDonough School of Business faculty in the operations and information management group work on topics related to sustainable operations, the workshop provided an opportunity to highlight their research,” said Agrawal.

In addition to presenting research and networking, attendees had the opportunity to award top papers on sustainable operations management. This year, the People’s Choice Award was given to Pia Ramchandani of the University of Pennsylvania and Somya Singhvi of MIT.

Ramchandani’s paper, titled “Why Do Companies Source Ethically? Certifications and Spillovers in Consumer Markets,” was written jointly with Hamsa Bastani and Ken Moon.

Singhvi’s paper, “Unifying Agricultural Wholesale Markets: Impact on Market Prices and Farmer’s Profitability,” was authored with Retsef Levi, Manoj Rajan, and Yanchong (Karen) Zheng.

“Attendees were able to learn about the latest high-quality research on sustainable operations, as well as keep up with developments in the field,” said Agrawal.
