Meet the Class of 2020: Tory Paez (MBA’20)
Tory Paez (MBA’20)
Hometown: Cleveland, Ohio
Why did you choose Georgetown?
I chose Georgetown University because of its focus on social impact and its proximity in Washington, D.C.—a hub for public policy and international development. I wanted to harness the MBA experience to unite my past experiences in consulting, with my passion for doing good in the world.
What is your favorite memory or proudest moment from your time at Georgetown?
I enjoyed completing the Global Business Experience with our client ProFish in Ghana. We had the opportunity to visit our client partner in Accra and learn first-hand about their supply chain and operations, as well as their growth strategy ideas. I had an amazing team and it was an incredible learning opportunity.
What is one of the most important lessons you have learned while at Georgetown?
I learned how to take risks! Before my MBA, I served in the Peace Corps where I witnessed food and agriculture challenges. This inspired me to use my time at Georgetown to learn more about sustainable food systems. This experience led me to work at the Dupont Circle farmers market, in addition to attending MBArk2Boulder Food Leadership Conference, and even volunteering at CO Project Farm in Portugal.
Is there a particular person that helped shape your Georgetown experience?
I met one of my best friends and fellow MBA, Audrey Voorhees, while studying here at Georgetown. She is a strategic thinker, incredibly authentic, and fiercely passionate about making the world a better and more inclusive place. She has contributed so much to organizations like Georgetown’s Net Impact and the Beeck Center for Social Impact and Innovation, as well as Ashoka. I have been so lucky to meet such an amazing friend in this program!
What was your favorite class?
I really enjoyed our seminar-style class, Managing the Enterprise and Ethical Leadership, with Bill Novelli, distinguished professor of the practice in the McDonough School of Business and creator of the Global Social Enterprise Initiative. The open and honest discussions were a highlight of my MBA career.
What are you most looking forward to as an alumna?
This abrupt end due to COVID-19 has me holding on tight to the student experience! However, I am most looking forward to a rewarding career and sustainable income.
