MA-IBP Graduate Student and Active U.S. Army Officer Selected as a Tillman Scholar
Timothy Torres (MA-IBP’21) has been selected as a prestigious Tillman Scholar by the Pat Tillman Foundation. The active-duty U.S. Army officer was selected from thousands of applicants to be one of 60 leaders to participate in the scholarship program.
The Pat Tillman Foundation selects remarkable service members, veteran, and military spouses as they look to begin their next chapter as public and private sector leaders. Named after Patrick Tillman, who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2004, Tillman scholars are part of “a growing network of leaders who are dedicated to service beyond self.” Scholars have the opportunity to become part of a network of leaders making an impact tackling challenges across national security, healthcare, technology, civil rights, education, and more.
“The Tillman Scholarship is all about service, scholarship, humble leadership, and impact, but you’re not exactly being brought into Tillman for what you accomplished in the past,” said Torres. “You’re selected for what you can do in the future, the good you’re going to do, and the impact you’re going to make on the world in a positive way.”
After serving as an army ranger and in diplomatic military roles over 11 deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, Torres is currently pursuing a Master of Arts in International Business and Policy (MA-IBP), a joint program of Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business and School of Foreign Service (SFS).
MA-IBP blends the strengths of the most highly regarded foreign service school in the world with a top-tier business school that educates global, principled leaders.
“I chose MA-IBP to strengthen my skill set and gain insight into the finer points of diplomatic and economic policy,” says Torres. “I intend to use this knowledge to affect real-world diplomacy that will bring nations and people closer together.”
After Torres graduates from the MA-IBP program in December 2021, he will be posted as a defense attaché in East Africa before ultimately moving west to leverage his military, diplomatic, and educational experiences to help prevent conflict through economic development.
“There is no shortage of people who need help in the world, and that’s one of the biggest reasons I’m honored to be part of the Tillman scholarship,” said Torres.
