Undergraduate Class of 2020 Recognized for Academic Honors

The Undergraduate Program at Georgetown’s McDonough School of Business has announced its academic honors for the Class of 2020, including naming Katie Merola as valedictorian and Caprice Catalano as salutatorian.

“Our community is thrilled to celebrate these extraordinary women for their achievements,” said Patricia Grant, senior associate dean for the Undergraduate Program. “Katie and Caprice, we are so proud of your accomplishments in the classroom and beyond, and we look forward to all you have yet to offer the world.”

Merola majored in finance and international business at Georgetown McDonough with a minor in theology. She served as an intern in the Georgetown University Investment Office, as well as at Citi, where she was an investment banking summer analyst for two years. During her time on the Hilltop, Merola was a risk analyst for the Georgetown University Alumni and Student Federal Credit Union, the chief operating officer of Hilltop Consultants, and a middle school tutor with Hoya Helpers. She was honored at the school’s virtual Tropaia ceremony with the Center for Financial Markets and Policy Award for Achievement in Finance and the International Business Faculty Award for Academic Excellence. She also was inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma and served as the chapter vice president.

Catalano majored in both finance and operations and information management with a minor in mathematics. She was a McDonough Peer Tutor, a teaching assistant, and a student analyst for the Beeck Center for Social Impact + Innovation. Catalano also was a summer intern at BlackRock. She completed research on the use of neural networks in social innovation to predict HIV prevalence across the globe as part of the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program and wrote a senior honors thesis on the impact of different types of transparency information on consumer purchasing behavior in the fashion industry. Her other activities included UNICEF Georgetown, Hoya Helpers tutoring, Georgetown Club Tennis, DCivitas, and The Big Hunt. During Tropaia, she received the Operations and Information Management Faculty Award for Academic Excellence, and she has been inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma, Alpha Sigma Nu, Omega Rho, and Alpha Phi Omega.
