How to Apply

Admission to the Executive Master’s in Leadership is highly selective. Competitive participants are currently employed mid- to senior-level executives with a demonstrated capacity for leadership.

Eligible applicants hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and have at least eight years postgraduate professional experience.

Regardless of previous fields of study, applicants must have the academic aptitude needed to succeed in a rigorous Executive Education program.

Professionals from diverse backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply.

Applications for the Class of 2011 will be accepted on a rolling basis with deadlines of July 15, 2009, November 1, 2009 and February 15, 2010.

The next program begins in March 2010.

A complete application includes the following materials:

1. Online Application Form
All prospective students are required to apply online.

2. Current résumé
This must be submitted online along with the application.

3. Application Fee
All applicants are charged a non-refundable application fee of $175. This fee can be paid online when submitting the application.

Requests for waiver of the application fee are not accepted.

4. Official Transcripts
All applicants must submit official transcripts of all work beyond secondary school prior to matriculation.

Only official documents will be accepted for consideration. A document is official when submitted to the Office of Admissions in a sealed envelope, signed across the seal by the appropriate academic officer.

All transcripts must be translated into English and evaluated in English, if applicable.

5. Essays
Applicants must submit responses to each of the following three (3) essay questions:

ESSAY 1: Describe your most successful leadership experience. Explain how you led the process and achieved the stated objectives. What made it successful?

ESSAY 2: Describe a leadership experience you would qualify as a failure. How did you fail to meet your goals and objectives? What lessons were learned?

ESSAY 3: How will receiving an Executive Master’s in Leadership from Georgetown University allow you to achieve your professional goals?

6. Letters of Recommendation
Two (2) letters of recommendation are required and should be submitted online along with the application form. At least one of the letters should be written by a professional reference such as a superior or colleague familiar with the applicant’s leadership abilities and potential.

Georgetown University reserves the right to contact the recommenders for any applicant during the admissions process.

7. Readiness for Graduate Study
At least one of the following:

  • A previous Graduate Degree from an accredited institution
  • A standardized Test Score from the GMAT, GRE, LSAT, or MCAT
  • A strong writing portfolio
  • Work experience of over 12 years
  • Professional certification (such as CPA, CFA, Professional Engineering Certification, Registration as an Architect, etc. etc.)
  • Exceptional Global experience (please elaborate)
  • Other demonstration of capacity to succeed in demanding post-graduate studies

8. English Language Proficiency
All applicants who are not native English speakers are required to demonstrate a level of proficiency in the English language sufficient to meet the admission requirements of Georgetown’s McDonough School of Business.

Proficiency can be demonstrated by the receipt of a bachelor's or advanced degree from an accredited institution of higher education in the United States or from a university in another country where English is the primary language of instruction.

All other non-native speakers must submit a TOEFL examination score report of at least 600. For information concerning the time and place where the TOEFL will be given, applicants should contact:

9. Employer Support Letter
Due to absence from work during Friday classes and residencies, students must receive a letter of support from their employer.

10. Admissions Interview
Candidates are required to schedule an on-campus interview at Georgetown University. The interview allows admissions personnel a chance to meet each candidate to assess the candidate's motivation and suitability for the coursework. In addition, the interview gives the candidate the opportunity to offer additional information to support his or her application.

Admissions Committee Review

Applications will be reviewed and interviews will be scheduled only after all application materials are received.
Completion of the admission file is the responsibility of the applicant.
