Double Hoya Competed in the Men’s 1500M at 2020 Tokyo Olympics

Double Hoya Amos Bartelsmeyer (SFS’17, MSF’19) represented more than his home country of Germany in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo this past summer. He was one of six Hoyas representing Georgetown on the world stage.

He competed in the first heat of the men’s 1500m on August 2, 2021, finishing 11th with a time of 3:38.36.

“It was unbelievable, incredibly gratifying, and at many points stressful, but an altogether unforgettable experience,” said Bartelsmeyer. “It was the culmination of years of training. I hope to get the chance to do it again.”

Before qualifying to go to Tokyo, Bartelsmeyer boasted an impressive record on the Georgetown University track and field team during his five years.

He is a seven-time All-American in track and field and cross country as well as a First Team All-American.

Bartelsmeyer is a seven-time BIG EAST individual title holder (3 indoor, 4 outdoor), including a trio of titles in the outdoor 4×800-meter relay. His seven total BIG EAST individual crowns is tied for seventh-best in program history.

Heading into his senior year in the School of Foreign Service, Bartelsmeyer had one year of eligibility left. He wanted to finish out that year here on the Hilltop and was looking for a program that would suit his needs.

Already having an interest in finance, he came across the Georgetown McDonough Master in Finance (MSF) program, the first technology-intensive program at Georgetown McDonough. 

“The MSF program allowed me the flexibility to keep competing while going to grad school,” Bartelsmeyer said. “I was able to combine my interest in finance and energy as well as continue my athletic career.”

The program blends asynchronous learning with weekly classes held in the program’s revolutionary blended classroom, where students can attend class in person or online and receive the same educational experience.

“The most rewarding parts were the opportunities we had to get to know our fellow classmates through the on-site residencies and the final [Global Consulting] project, and hear about their life experiences,” said Bartelsmeyer. “I really enjoyed getting to know people that I wouldn’t normally cross paths with, especially given that I was one of the youngest members of my class.”

Since graduating, Bartelsmeyer has expressed an interest in pursuing a career in energy and finance. One thing he is especially excited about is renewable energy and hopes to pursue a career in the field.

“For now I will continue to run professionally as my full-time job,” said Bartelsmeyer. “My next objectives are the World and European Championships next year, which are being held in the United States and Germany respectively. I do however hope to pursue a career in renewable energy once I retire from running.”
