Meet the New McDonough Faculty: April Nguyen

We spoke with April Nguyen, an assistant teaching professor of accounting, about what she hopes to accomplish at Georgetown through her engagement with students, research, classroom teachings, and beyond.

What are you most looking forward to when it comes to working at Georgetown McDonough?

Being a part of a community of the brightest and the most self-driven students, as well as the best faculty to work and collaborate alongside. 

What institution or previous line of work are you coming from? 

I was a tenure-track assistant professor of accounting for two years at the University of the District of Columbia after I received my Ph.D. in accounting from Boston University in 2021.

What is your area(s) of expertise and which subject(s) are you most passionate about?  

My research interest focuses on archival research on financial reporting, especially bank reporting and corporate taxation. In terms of teaching, I teach Financial Statement Analysis  and Federal Income Taxation: Business Entities at the undergraduate level, and Financial Analysis for Managers and Investors in the MBA program. 

I am most passionate about teaching Financial Statement Analysis for undergraduate students. Financial statements are a primary input to decisions as varied as equity investing, credit analysis, strategic acquisitions, government regulatory oversight, and labor and compensation negotiations. This course helps students interpret and analyze firms’ financial reports, with an emphasis on investor decision-making. It uses an integrated approach spanning strategy, operations, finance, and accounting, but the primary focus is on the informational role of accounting.

What is your favorite podcast or book and why? 

Taxes for the Masses a podcast by Lisa De Simone of University of Texas at Austin and Bridget Stomberg of Indiana University. The podcast breaks down current tax topics in a way that’s not only easy to understand but is also fun to listen to. 

How would you describe yourself in a few words? 

A loving wife and mom.

What do you hope to ultimately bring to the McDonough community? 

I hope to bring my almost 10 years of experience working in the investment banking industry at JP Morgan, combined with my interests in doing research and teaching accounting, to hopefully make McDonough students find accounting fun and useful for their jobs.
