Location? Location… Location! Where Is Your B-school and Does It Matter?
In this episode of the Clear Admit MBA Admissions podcast, associate dean of MBA admissions, Shelly Heinrich, talks about the location of an MBA program and the impact it has on studying, learning outside of the classroom, job/internship hunting, and working in the long run.
The Flex MBA is part of a vibrant community of students, faculty, staff, and alumni who collaborate, mentor, and support one another for a lifetime. DC Advantage
While attending Georgetown McDonough, you will live and learn at the global nexus of business, policy, and international affairs. As a business hub — particularly for high-tech and entrepreneurial startups — Washington D.C., is home to investment capital firms, start-up incubators, and the most highly educated citizenry of any major metropolitan area in the country.
Online Advantage
In addition to two in-person residencies, Flex MBA Online students have numerous opportunities to experience the tight-knit, collaborative Georgetown McDonough community for which our MBA program is known. If you choose to come to campus or are in the Washington, D.C., vicinity, you can participate in select student organizations, service opportunities, and other community events offered in a hybrid or online format throughout the year.
Service to Others
Curriculum in Service
Our school’s value of service to others is woven throughout all aspects of the MBA Programs. Beginning with MBA Orientation, you will participate in Service Day – an initiative to conduct volunteer projects in our local community. Our coursework further reinforces principles of service and ethics through classes like Consulting Clinic – where you are matched with consulting projects at local small businesses and nonprofits – and Principled Leadership in Business and Society.
Co-curricular Opportunities
Clubs: MBA Volunteers, Net Impact, and other student organizations coordinate opportunities for you to become involved with the local and global community. From serving as a Board Fellow with local nonprofits to raising money for the international justice mission, you’ll have the opportunity to make an impact.
Month of Volunteerism: This monthlong event highlights Georgetown’s service ethic of women and men for others. Each November, Georgetown McDonough students compete to see which cohort can volunteer the most hours at nearly 100 different events. The winning cohort donates $1,000 to the charity of their choice. Since its creation in 2011, students have volunteered nearly 3,000 hours and served more than 60 organizations.
Service Treks: MBA students volunteer to give back in D.C. and around the world. In fall 2016, MBA students went to Guanajuato, Mexico, to help at Casa de los Angeles, a daycare center for orphans and children of single mothers. The students assisted the teachers by feeding, cleaning, and playing with the children and teaching them how to walk. “We left with new friends and a new perspective on Mexico. Most importantly we left with the children we worked with forever in our hearts and memories,” said John Wenstrand (MBA’16).
Recognition
At graduation, we honor those who have demonstrated a commitment of service to others through the Community Fellows Program. Those students who have devoted at least 100 hours of community service during their MBA studies are designated as Community Fellows and are honored at an end-of-the-year celebration, as well as recognition at Commencement. In 2017, a total of 199 graduating MBA students submitted community service hours — a 14% increase over the previous year — for a total of 6,214 hours logged by the MBA classes. Nineteen students were recognized as Community Fellows.
